e-Bike Battery Chemistry

Lithium Ion battery cells could be made from a few different Chemical components, which determine the performance and best suitable application for the cell to be used in. They are:

      Lithium Cobalt Oxide(LiCoO2)-

Its high specific energy makes Li-cobalt the popular choice for mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras.

Lithium Manganese Oxide (LiMn2O4)-
Low internal cell resistance enables fast charging and high-current discharging. High power but with less capacity, Li-manganese is used for power tools, medical instruments, as well as hybrid and electric vehicles.

Lithium Iron Phosphate(LiFePO4)-

Li-phosphate offers good electrochemical performance with low resistance. It has good safety and long life span but moderate specific energy and elevated self-discharge. Besides for this, lower capacity and increased prices make Li-phosphate less suitable option for many applications.

Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (LiNiCoAlO2)-

NCA offers high specific energy, reasonably good specific power and a long life span. Yet the safety record and cost of NCA drastically decrease its popularity. NCA has average performance and is often found in EV powertrains

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (LiNiMnCoO2 or NMC)-

The secret of NMC lies in combining nickel and manganese. An analogy of this is table salt in which the main ingredients, sodium and chloride, are toxic on their own but mixing them serves as seasoning salt and food preserver. Nickel is known for its high specific energy but poor stability; manganese has the benefit of forming a strong spinel structure to achieve low internal resistance, but offers a low specific energy. Combining the metals enhances each other strengths. NMC provides high capacity and high power, with good safety and long cycle life. This battery is the preferred candidate for the electric vehicle and has the lowest self-heating rate. NMC is the battery of choice for power tools, e-bikes and other electric powertrains.
