Battery Types | e-Bike Guide
First rechargeable batteries used for battery packs were of the NiMh and NiCd types. Today, most e-bike batteries are the Lithium based Li-ion battery type. Li-ion and NiMH batteries can actually hold a similar amount of power, but the lithium-ion cells can be charged and discharged more rapidly. NiMH batteries are larger and heavier than Li-ion batteries. NiCd are well understood but relatively low in energy density and they contain toxic metals which are environmentally unfriendly. All these factors and also the better safety performance of Li-ion batteries, make Li-ion ideal for e-bike battery pack use, that is why LaBatteria-FULL POWER chose these.
Li-ion battery cells come in two main forms, prismatic and cylindrical cells. Both are used in e-bike batteries packs, yet cylindrical type cells are recommended amd much more common . The prismatic cell improves space utilization and allows flexible design but it can be more expensive to manufacture, less efficient in thermal management and have a shorter cycle life than the cylindrical design, while swelling is very common.
Cylindrical cell type advantages are ease of manufacture and good mechanical stability. The tubular cylinder can withstand high internal pressures without deforming, has good cycling ability, offers a long calendar life and is economical, but has low packaging density due to space cavities. This is the best option for e-bike batteries, and is LaBatteria-FULL POWER’s choice.
Common types of Cylindrical cells are 18650 and 26650. For 18650, the metallic cylinder measure is 18mm in diameter and 65mm the length. The larger 26650 cell measures 26mm in diameter, also with a 65mm the length.
